Monday Morning
Not a whole lot of new news out there so far this morning, but I went to my first game at Shea since I started this site, and Willets Point looked like even more of a waste of space. I've got faith that the Mayor can get this plan through, but it takes all of us getting involved to help push the process along.
Tell your friends to take action and check out this site, and I'll keep updating any ideas I have. If you've got any suggestions, send me an email because I'd love to hear them, too.
And as always, contact your city council representatives!
Thanks to BMF for the mention. They make a great point about making use of Willets Point for tennis, too.
And thanks also to the one and only Metsblog for mentioning Develop Willets Point.

Just out of curiosity, where is that picture from? Did you make that, or is it an official proposal? It looks gorgeous, Citi Field would look a million times better if it were surrounded by a nicely developed neighborhood.
As a libertarian, I have torn feelings about this project, because I despise Eminent Domain, which I imagine will have to be used, but at the same time I REALLY want to see the area around Citi Field developed. I wish some private developers would buy up all that land, but I doubt it'll happen, so government intervention seems the only way. Hopefully a fair deal can be worked out for all the property owners in the area to convince them to move out...
Christopher,
That picture was created by NYC in their project plans. I agree that it looks like it would be an amazing area.
I understand your concerns, and I think they will be addressed by the city. As bad as eminent domain sounds, there are some businesses in the area that I don't think would be missed.
Whether or not it's a good policy, I think this is the 'ideal' situation that eminent domain should be used for.
I've utilized Willets Point (which me and my friends cheerfully refer to as 'guatamala', which is probably an insult to guatamala) to make a quick escape to the GCP, but I desperately want some sort of 'Metstown' area.
I once saw a movie being filmed back there, it was the weirdest thing.
